The F-15 That Landed With One Wing
After a midair collision tore away nearly the entire right wing of an Israeli F-15, its crew faced an aircraft that should have been uncontrollable. What followed became one of aviation history’s most remarkable emergency landings.
On May 1, 1983, an Israeli Air Force F-15D was flying over the Negev Desert when a training exercise turned into a life-or-death emergency.
The fighter collided with an A-4 Skyhawk. The impact destroyed the A-4 and tore away almost the entire right wing of the F-15.
The damaged Eagle should have fallen from the sky.
Instead, pilot Zivi Nedivi and navigator Yehoar Gal regained control, reached Ramon Airbase, and landed. Only after the aircraft stopped did they fully understand what had happened.
This is the story of the F-15 that came home with one wing.

A Training Mission Over the Negev
The aircraft involved was Israeli Air Force F-15D Baz No. 957, a two-seat version of the American-designed F-15 Eagle.
That day, F-15s and A-4 Skyhawks were conducting dissimilar air-combat training over southern Israel. Exercises of this kind allowed fighter crews to practice against aircraft with different sizes, speeds, and handling characteristics.
During the maneuvering, Nedivi’s F-15 and one of the A-4s moved into dangerously close positions. The crews could not avoid each other in time.
The aircraft collided at an altitude of approximately 13,000 to 14,000 feet.
The A-4 broke apart, but its pilot ejected and survived. The F-15 was thrown into a violent, uncontrolled roll.
The Wing Was Almost Completely Gone
The collision had removed the F-15’s right wing approximately two feet from its root. Only a short section remained beside the fuselage.
Nedivi and Gal did not immediately know the full extent of the damage. Fuel escaping from the broken wing area produced a dense cloud of vapor that obscured their view.
Inside the cockpit, the crew faced a more immediate problem: the aircraft was spinning and losing altitude.
Ejection appeared to be the safest choice. But Nedivi discovered that adding power helped stabilize the aircraft. He engaged the afterburners, increased the F-15’s speed, and gradually recovered enough control to keep flying.

Why Speed Made the Difference
An aircraft normally depends on both wings to generate lift and remain balanced. Removing nearly an entire wing creates an enormous difference in lift between the two sides, forcing the aircraft to roll toward the damaged side.
The F-15, however, was not an ordinary airframe.
Its wide fuselage, remaining wing, horizontal stabilizers, and other aerodynamic surfaces could generate some lift when the aircraft moved fast enough. Its two powerful engines also provided the thrust needed to maintain that speed.
The crew had not transformed the damaged F-15 into a normally functioning aircraft. They had found a narrow and extremely dangerous range in which it could remain controllable.
Slowing down caused the aircraft to become unstable again. That meant a conventional low-speed landing would probably end in disaster.
Nedivi would have to approach the runway far faster than normal.

Ten Miles to Ramon Airbase
The damaged fighter was roughly ten miles from Ramon Airbase.
That was close enough to attempt a landing, but every mile remained dangerous. The aircraft’s control depended on maintaining speed and power. A sudden engine problem, another loss of control, or a failed approach could leave the crew without enough altitude to recover.
As the F-15 approached Ramon, Nedivi prepared for a landing at approximately 250 to 260 knots—nearly twice a normal approach speed.
The emergency arresting system offered a chance to stop the speeding aircraft. Nedivi lowered the F-15’s tailhook, intending to catch a cable stretched across the runway.
The fighter touched down hard and fast.
Its hook engaged the cable, but the tremendous speed and force tore the hook away from the aircraft. The F-15 continued racing along the runway.
Nedivi used the brakes and every remaining means of control. The aircraft finally stopped only a short distance from the runway’s end.
Both men were alive.
The Damage Revealed
After stopping, Nedivi turned to acknowledge Gal. Only then did he see the empty space where the right wing should have been.
Fuel vapor had hidden the damage while they were airborne. Had the crew clearly seen that almost the entire wing was missing, they might have concluded that landing was impossible and ejected.
The conventional description that the aircraft landed “with one wing” is almost accurate—but a short stump of the right wing remained attached. That detail does not make the landing less extraordinary. The missing structure included nearly all the right wing’s lifting surface.

An Aircraft Designed to Survive
The landing demonstrated several strengths of the F-15’s design.
The Eagle combined powerful twin engines with a broad fuselage and large control surfaces. The U.S. Air Force describes its performance as the result of high thrust relative to weight and low wing loading under normal conditions.
In this emergency, the remaining aerodynamic surfaces and powerful engines gave Nedivi just enough control to keep the damaged aircraft airborne at high speed.
Pilot skill was equally important. Nedivi recognized that power stabilized the aircraft, avoided slowing into an unrecoverable condition, and committed to an unusually fast landing. Gal remained with him as they worked through an emergency neither man could have practiced realistically.
The survival of the crew resulted from engineering, judgment, and a narrow margin of luck.
F-15 No. 957 Flew Again
The story did not end at the edge of the runway.
Israeli technicians recovered the aircraft and replaced its destroyed wing. F-15D No. 957 eventually returned to operational service.
An aircraft that appeared ready for a scrapyard flew again—an outcome almost as remarkable as the landing itself.
Why the Story Still Matters
Photographs of the damaged F-15 look impossible. One side appears almost intact, while the other ends beside the fuselage in torn metal and exposed structure.
But this was not proof that wings are unnecessary. It was evidence that an unusual aircraft, kept inside a tiny survivable flight envelope by a determined crew, could remain airborne after catastrophic damage.
The incident is remembered because it brought together three powerful elements: a proven fighter design, a crew that refused to surrender control, and an emergency landing with almost no margin for error.
The F-15 did not simply survive a collision.
Against almost every reasonable expectation, it came home.
